APAICS Summer Internship FAQ

What is the selection process for APAICS interns?

Online application and supporting materials must be submitted to APAICS by the deadline provided on application. There are two stages in the selection process:

1) All completed applications will be read and scored by a Selection Committee

2) Finalists will do a Skype interview with APAICS staff

 

How many interns are selected and how are placements determined?

APAICS identifies office placements and maintain the final say as to where interns are placed. The number of interns depends on program funding. Check out our website to see where past APAICS interns have been placed: http://apaics.org/summer-internship-alumni/

 

What do you look for when selecting APAICS interns?

There are a variety of factors that come into play during the selection process. Selected interns embody APAICS’ diversity goals and demonstrate leadership skills through active participation in student organizations and the greater AAPI community. In addition to academic achievement, our interns are politically aware, socially sensitive, committed to public service and share a common vision about promoting Asian Pacific American representation in the political process.

 

What are the academic qualifications?

Applicants must be currently be a full-time undergraduate student currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution. Recent graduates who have graduated within one semester of the internship program’s start date are welcome to apply.

 

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to apply?

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have lawful permanent residence status at the time of application. Individuals who are seeking consideration under the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA) policy must possess an Employment Authorization Document.

 

Is prior work experience required?

No, but many of our interns have evidenced leadership and communication skills through internships, volunteer experiences, or part-time employment prior to applying to our program.

Is there a waitlist for the APAICS Internship Program?

Yes. Those on the waitlist for the APAICS Internship Program will be contacted regarding this process.

 

What is the stipend?

The APAICS Summer Internship Program provides a $2,500 stipend

 

Is house provided?

Housing assistance is not provided.

 

What is the typical work-day like?

The typical work-day depends on the office where interns are placed, but activities may include: attend briefings and paper reports, research policy and legislation, draft correspondence, lead tours of the Capitol for visiting constituents and answer constituent mail.

 

Can I be enrolled in classes during the internship?

No, this is a full-time opportunity that requires your focus and undivided commitment.

 

Do I have to be in DC to do the internship?

Yes.

 

How long is the internship?

The internship is an eight-week long program.

 

Who should I ask for a letter of recommendation?

You must submit TWO letters of recommendation (one must be from a professional reference). The letters of recommendation provide APAICS with a more complete picture of your professional and academic interests and capabilities, so it is best to incorporate a variety of recommenders. Use your best judgment about who you think will provide a solid letter of recommendation.

 

If I am not accepted, can I apply again in the future?

Yes. We encourage applicants who have not been accepted to do so.

 

Is it possible to defer my placement as an APAICS intern?

No. If you do not participate in the program for the term in which you were admitted, you must submit a new application to reapply for a different term.
