About the National Leadership Academy
The APAICS National Leadership Academy is a two-day leadership training program for current elected officials and individuals seeking to run for public office.
The program consists of interactive leadership training with special guest speakers. Topics include planning your campaign, communications, fundraising, digital organizing, building your base and power mapping, and volunteer management.
The National Leadership Academy was established in 1999 to provide Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) elected officials with the skills and resources needed to excel in their current office as well as prepare them for opportunities to advance into higher office.
The National Leadership Academy brings together a bipartisan group of promising AAPI political leaders from state legislatures, city councils, and local governing bodies all across the country to Washington, DC.
The academy will take place all day on Friday, July 26, 2019 and Saturday, July 27, 2019. There will be a reception on Friday, July 26, 2019.

APAICS will provide the following items to the National Leadership Academy attendees based on the distance you must travel to Washington, DC.
Lodging: Attendees who live more than 40 miles from the Washington Hilton will receive a shared hotel room for two (2) nights (Thursday, July 25 and Friday, July 26) at a nearby hotel. Each attendee will share their hotel room with another attendee. If you would like your own room, you will be able to pay extra for this option once accepted to the academy. Spouses or other guests are not permitted to stay in shared hotel rooms.
Travel: Those who travel to DC by car, train, or bus will be reimbursed for these costs up to $200. APAICS adheres to the federal rate of mileage reimbursement when driving a personal vehicle.
Attendees for whom air travel makes the most sense will receive a voucher for a round trip flight to Washington, DC from anywhere in the continental United States provided by Southwest Airlines. The voucher must be used to travel to the National Leadership Academy and cannot be kept for future trips. Attendees traveling to Washington, DC from a U.S. state or territory outside the continental United States will be reimbursed for additional travel up to $200.
Current elected officials are not eligible for the complimentary travel voucher or hotel room. Instead, they will be reimbursed for travel up to a total of $200. APAICS assumes that current elected officials, their staff, and any other restricted individuals will file all necessary gift paperwork.
To be reimbursed, you will be asked to fill out a reimbursement form and provide copies of all receipts. If you cannot produce a receipt, regardless of the amount, you will not be reimbursed for that expense.
Contract: To receive these benefits, you must attend the entire National Leadership Academy. All attendees will be asked to sign a contract agreeing to this stipulation.
All applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or individuals who are legally authorized to work full-time without restriction for any U.S. employer.
