2023 Panel Overviews

Building Our Digital Infrastructure

Although studies show Asian Americans are the most digitally connected community in America, there is, however, a significant portion of the AA & NH/PI community that still lack reliable internet access, leading to a growing digital divide. As government programs work to address the existing gaps, the most marginalized AA & NH/PI communities have unique needs that must be considered for these programs to be effective. This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities surrounding funding and infrastructure in bridging this digital divide and how the AA & NH/PI community can have a seat at the table when it comes to decision making for digital infrastructure projects.

Digital Equity in a Changing World

The need for increased connectivity becomes more crucial as the world rapidly evolves and embraces new technologies. From small businesses to classrooms and healthcare providers, digital literacy and high speed internet access are now basic requirements for success. This panel will explore the opportunities that come with enhancing connectivity in a changing world where emerging technologies, shifting demographics, and evolving communication patterns require innovative solutions across sectors.

Preparing the Digital Workforce

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technologies are transforming the skills required by today’s workforce. AI is increasingly integrated into various sectors, rapidly reshaping the landscape of industries and the nature of work, from center stage in the Hollywood writers' strike to saving lives with more accurate medical diagnoses. This panel will discuss policies and initiatives that can ensure individuals, and communities of color in particular, are equipped to thrive in the changing job market.

Regulatory and Policy Frameworks for AI

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) advances and becomes more integrated into various aspects of society, establishing effective regulatory and policy frameworks becomes imperative. Panelists will discuss the ethical considerations, including transparency, accountability, and legal implications necessary to ensure the responsible and beneficial development, deployment, and use of AI technologies.

Impact of Increased Competition Between the U.S. and China

Competition between the U.S. and China in STEM is reshaping the global technology landscape, with both countries striving to achieve different global orders. This competition within the tech sector has been driven partly by values and economics and will shape the rest of the 21st century. This panel will explore how anti-China rhetoric and policy impact AA & NH/PI engineers and scientists, along with the greater community, and how we can navigate this precarious landscape within the tech industry

and beyond.

Tech for Good: Unleashing the Power of Technology for Positive Social Impact

Technology has the potential to be a powerful force for driving positive change and addressing pressing challenges. This panel will explore the innovative ways technology can be harnessed for social good, discussing successful initiatives and strategies for leveraging technology to create a more inclusive and sustainable world.

Striking a Balance: Promoting Digital Wellness, Trust and Safety

Digital wellness, trust, and safety have become critical concerns in today's increasingly connected world. This panel will explore the challenges and strategies in promoting digital well-being, fostering trust in online interactions, and ensuring the safety and security of digital environments. Panelists will discuss the impact of technology on mental health, efforts to combat mis- and dis-information, and strategies for building a healthier and safer digital ecosystem.
